Apple rant.

Arrow Wednesday, September 13, 2006 @ 10:30 am

Okay, someone explain why there was so much speculation on Monday about Apple’s whole “It’s Showtime” thing on Tuesday, yet nothing about what actually happened when I checked the news last night?

Furthermore, I just opened the iTunes Music Store to check out this week’s free songs, and bang, it looks completely different. New colors (blue), new layout, $9.99 movie downloads, and apparently iTunes 7 and Quicktime 7.1.3 are released as well — could’ve fooled me. Whatever happened to iTunes frickin’ telling me when there’s an update? I had to accidentally view some TV show downloads to find out

Also, since when are there iPod games? I just noticed the little Music Store button today. Not like I can use them (they only work with 5G iPods — I have a 4G) and the $44 price tag is kinda high, but still — games on my iPod (and my phone for that matter) would be nice.

Edit: Just finished downloading iTunes 7. Um, yeah. New colors (more blue) and layout on that too. Is the pretty white/silver/gray motif gone for good? It looks cool and all, it’s just, wtf, usually there’s some kind of news/warning with this much change. Now it’s updating the album artwork on my 4,508 songs …

Maybe ants aren’t all that bad.

Arrow Thursday, September 7, 2006 @ 8:15 pm

I just saw the neatest thing. There was an ant by the sink (one of the big gross black ones) and I was about to wash it down the drain when I noticed it was carrying a dead ant. It carried him all the way to the edge of the sink, dropped him into the basin, and walked away. I’d never seen anything like that before, and while I generally don’t like bugs in the house (or bats!) and spray them if I can, I certainly appreciate this particular ant’s efforts in getting rid of its dead for me  Hopefully it’ll continue!

It’s a PC, it’s a Mac … it’s both!

Arrow Tuesday, September 5, 2006 @ 10:42 pm

I’m so excited. I was looking for new desktop wallpaper yesterday (for the 405945th time … I can never find anything I like for more than 10 minutes) and suddenly decided on the pretty blue Mac one … but why get just the wallpaper when I can get the whole thing? On a whim I Googled “make my PC look like a Mac” and was hit with lots and lots of ways to completely turn my GUI upside down. So I said wheee and got to work!

Here’s the before shot:

Before shot of my desktop

And here’s the after shot:

After shot of my desktop

Impressed? I am! Here’s the somewhat exhaustive list of programs I used:

WindowBlinds: applied the Tiger skin to my windows
ObjectDock: gave me a dock
ObjectBar: gave me a Finder bar at the top of the screen
Konfabulator (by Yahoo): supplied the cool desktop widgets
YzShadow: added a subtle shadow to the windows
IconPackager: replaced the standard Windows icons with Mac icons
CursorXP: replaced the standard Windows cursors with Mac cursors
Trillian: displayed my buddy list with a nice iChat skin

A big thanks goes out to these sites for tons of links and downloads: Make Your PC Work Like a Mac, Turn your PC into a Mac, Mac Emulation Resources, and How To Make Windows Look Like A Mac.

I know the mods don’t change anything in how Windows works (they probably make it slower lol), but now I’m halfway to owning a Mac and even if there was slowness, I’d deal with it  I’m not done either — Mac Emulation Resources has a bajillion awesome things I need to check out!

Edit: I turned my PC back to the way it was yesterday (the 12th) ’cause everything just seemed to be getting slower and slower and … yeah. But it was fun while it lasted

Crikey no more.

Aww, Steve Irwin (The Crocodile Hunter) was killed by a stingray today. I read about it during a break in class and then the professor in my next class told us. It’s sad ’cause stingray stings are rarely fatal, and out of all the people in the world he had to be one of the unlucky few. At least he died doing what he loved.
