One unique thing about this group is their sound. They transcend the accepted prejudices in music because they are so cross cultural in a free, easy, natural way. It is so easy to accept them because they seem to come and meet you wherever you happen to be. It has been said that they were not white boys but their style just happens to transcend racial barriers.
They fit into the American genre. Not the genre of white America, or any other America. It is good when a group is universally appealing and I have no doubt in my mind that this is a major factor of their success.
I think that you are better at your art or profession when you do what you do out of pure love with no other agenda. For example, one group that I really loved to see in concert was Frankie Beverly and Maze. The reason that they appealed so much to me is because it was obvious that they just loved what they were doing. They were just fulfilling their first love and happened to make a bunch of money at it in the process.
They did not have a rehearsed choreography but their performance was much better than most groups who hired the best choreographers and practiced long hours every day. They played as they felt and it was what they felt that moved the audience rather than what they did.
I believe that this is the mindset that the Hanson’s operate from which is far superior to just wanting to put on a show. Operating out of love is selfless while just wanting to be seen is selfish.
The biggest factor of Michael Jackson’s success was that when he performed he actually lost his identity in the performance. He poured out his very soul to the music, even when he danced.
I like the story of how this group started. It seems that fate sort of just threw them together unwittingly with all of the right elements in place. It was up to them to listen to their destiny and make the right moves at the right time. When fate needed to push them in a certain direction that’s exactly what happened and when they needed to walk in the right direction they did exactly that. I once read about an interview where they were talking about their childhood and when you look back at it you can see all of the elements falling into place. There are many musicians out there who are extremely talented but the chips just haven’t fallen for them and for most of them they never will.
Don’t take this personally
I believe the thing that helped this group the most may have been the fact that their mother liked to listen to the older music of the era. I say this because I believe deep down in my heart of hearts that this was during the time when music was real in the sense that the artist had to perform from their soul. They didn’t have the fancy equipment that artists have now so they didn’t get as much help in performing from their instruments. Their voices were their instruments and had to be top notch. The human voice has to be controlled by the mind, thus the feelings and emotions had a major effect on the music.
Artists had to use their voices as an instrument and the lyrics had to have meaning. All of this had to work together in a synergistic harmony. This is the foundation that the Hanson brothers were brought up on.
